Nyi Ageng Serang

Orientation
 Nyi Ageng Serang, whose real name is Raden Ajeng Kustiyah Wulaningsih Retno Edhi. She was born in Serang, Sragen Regency, Central Java in 1762. She is a National Hero of Indonesia. Nyi Ageng Serang is the daughter of Prince Natapraja, a ruler of the Serang area, Central Java who is also the War Commander of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I.

Nyi Ageng is also a descendant of Sunan Kalijaga. In addition, she also has a grandson who will become a hero, namely R.M. Soewardi Surjaningrat or Ki Hadjar Dewantara.

Events
Deviating from the traditions that are still strong, Nyi Ageng Serang is a woman who diligently participates in military training and war tactics together with male soldiers. She also often followed her father into the battlefield to fight the invaders. Until, after her father died, she was then appointed to replace her father's position as ruler of Serang. Then she was given the title Nyi Ageng Serang.

During her leadership, many of her people were starving and experiencing misery as a result of the actions of the Dutch colonialists. She always helps the misery of her people by distributing food. In addition, she also fought physical resistance to expel Dutch troops from her homeland.

When the Diponegoro War broke out in 1825, Nyi Ageng Serang and troops loyal to her father joined the battle with Prince Diponegoro and his son-in-law Raden Mas (R.M.) Pak –Pak. Because of her very old age, 73 years, Nyi Ageng led her troops from a stretcher. Finally, after three years of fighting with Pangeran Diponegoro, Nyi Ageng Serang was no longer strong against the invaders because of her inadequate physical strength. She also withdrew from the war and the troops she led were taken over by Raden Mas Pak-Pak.

Reorientation
In 1828, Nyi Ageng Serang breathed her last at the age of 76. She is buried in Kalibawang, Kulon Progo. She left Serang as an independent area. For her services to the country, Nyi Ageng Serang was later confirmed as a national hero based on Presidential Decree No. 084 / TK / 1974.
